How Can I Regrow Hair Lost Due to Thyroid? Are There Home Remedies for This?

Thyroid disease is a condition caused by hormonal imbalances. It's sometimes called a "silent killer" because it quietly affects and weakens various parts of the body — bones, nerves, hair, nails, and overall health. There's no medicine that claims to permanently eliminate it at the root. However, certain home remedies, when used consistently, may help keep it under control — though you should never skip your prescribed medication.

Today on Upcharjano.com, we're talking about hair fall, one of the common effects of thyroid problems. If you're experiencing thyroid-related hair loss and wondering how to improve it, don't worry — it can be reversed. I've personally dealt with thyroid issues since I was 16 years old.

In my early years, I used to skip my medication because I didn't face many problems as a teenager. But as I grew older, my hair fall gradually got worse. I tried multiple medicines and switched shampoos several times, with zero results. Eventually, I got tired of that and started trying home remedies — both dietary and topical — but from that point on, I never skipped my medication again.

Let's go through those home remedies one by one. At the end, I'll also share the name of an Ayurvedic medicine I started taking 2–3 months ago that's given me good results.

Why Does Thyroid Disease Cause Hair Loss?

There are two types of thyroid conditions: hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid). Both can cause similar hair-related issues, with a few key differences — for instance, hypothyroidism tends to cause weight gain, while hyperthyroidism tends to cause weight loss. But when it comes to hair, the effects are quite similar:

  • Both conditions slow down the hair growth cycle, leading to thinning.
  • They make hair dry, damaged, and frizzy, increasing breakage.
  • Hair fall becomes more severe while growth slows, making the effects clearly visible.

If your thyroid levels are brought under control through proper medication and treatment, you may start noticing improvement within 3–6 months. Complete hair regrowth, however, can take approximately 8–12 months.

Home Remedies That May Support Hair Regrowth

1. Eat a Protein-Rich Diet

Make sure you're consuming enough protein-rich foods. Healthcare professionals often find that patients with hormonal imbalances are also deficient in protein.

2. Amla (Indian Gooseberry)

Amla is rich in iron and vitamins A, C, and E. Try eating one raw amla daily, first thing in the morning, about 30 minutes after your thyroid medication. It nourishes your body, skin, and nails — stick with it for a month straight and you should start noticing results yourself.

3. Iron-Rich Foods

Hormonal imbalances can also lead to iron deficiency, which contributes to severe hair fall. To help balance your iron levels, include foods like:

  • Leafy green vegetables, especially spinach
  • Lean meat (if you eat non-veg)
  • Chickpeas
  • Lentils

Add these to your daily routine alongside your protein intake for healthier hair.

4. Coconut Oil and Rosemary Scalp Massage

Warm some coconut oil with rosemary infused in it, and massage it into your scalp with your fingertips 1–2 times a week. This helps:

  • Reduce hair breakage
  • Moisturize the scalp
  • Minimize protein loss from hair

5. Coriander Seed Water

This remedy works directly on the thyroid. Soak 1 tablespoon of coriander seeds overnight in a glass of water. In the morning, boil the water with the seeds, strain it, and let it cool slightly. Sip it on an empty stomach, 30–40 minutes after your medication.

6. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s are excellent for thyroid patients, helping fill gaps in zinc, vitamin E, and other nutrients. Natural sources that support hair and scalp health include:

  • Chia seeds
  • Flax seeds
  • Fish (cod liver oil)
  • Walnuts

These don't just benefit your hair and scalp — they support your overall health too.

Top 3 Home Remedies to Apply Directly to Your Scalp

1. Curd and Fenugreek Seed Paste

A tried-and-tested remedy — with consistent application, it can genuinely help regrow hair.

Method:

  • Soak 1 tablespoon of fenugreek seeds (methi dana) in half a glass of water overnight.
  • In the morning, grind the soaked seeds along with the water they soaked in.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of curd and mix well.
  • Apply all over your scalp and hair, and leave it on for half an hour.
  • Wash off with a mild shampoo.

Note: Fenugreek can stick to your hair, so be careful not to let it dry out on your scalp.

2. Onion Juice with Coconut Oil

Onion juice is rich in sulfur, which helps promote hair growth. Since applying fenugreek weekly isn't always practical, this is a great alternative — and one of the easiest remedies for busy schedules.

Method:

  • Take one medium-sized onion, preferably a purple/red onion.
  • Grate it and extract the juice.
  • Mix the onion juice with coconut oil or olive oil, and apply from roots to tips.
  • Leave on for 2–3 hours, then wash off with a sulfate-free shampoo.

3. Hibiscus, Aloe Vera, and Curry Leaf Paste

Hibiscus and aloe vera make hair soft and shiny, and curry leaves are well known for their hair benefits. Grind all three ingredients into a smooth paste and apply to your hair. Leave on for 2–3 hours, then wash off with a mild shampoo. You can also add a hair oil of your choice to the mixture.

Used consistently once or twice a week, this remedy will gradually reduce frizz and improve your hair's overall texture.

A Note on Ayurvedic Support

As mentioned earlier, I want to share the name of the Ayurvedic medicine I personally use for thyroid support: Krishna's Thyro Balance Juice. It's worked well for me, but everyone's body responds differently, so monitor how yours reacts over the first week of use.

Important: I never stopped taking my prescribed thyroid medication, even while using this Ayurvedic syrup.
